and student manual for the lesson we will be discussing during the

Class Rules
- Do not do anything stupid.
- Do not do anything to disrupt others from learning or
from feeling the Spirit.
Among other things, this means that:
- Cell phones must be off (not just on vibrate), which means no texting and no making or taking calls.
- No talking except when it is your turn.
- No food or drink in the classroom.
- Do your part to learn and to invite the Spirit. Among other things, this means that you will:
- Have your scriptures out every day.
- Participate in class discussion and class activities.

Basic Information
- SEMINARY CLASS TIME. The first day of
Seminary for the 2008-2009 school year is August 25, 2008. Seminary starts at 6:00 a.m. On the first day, class will end at 6:30 a.m. to allow extra time to go to school. On all other days, Seminary will end at 6:40 a.m.
- HOLIDAYS. All school holidays are also observed for Seminary, plus there will be days when Seminary is pre-empted by faculty inservice training. The Seminary holidays are listed below.
- TEXT BOOK. The text book for
the 2008-2009 school year is the New Testament. Scriptures can be
purchased from the Church Distribution web site at ldscatalog.com. Because the scripture-storage locations in most classrooms are unlocked, I suggest using an inexpensive paperbound copy of the scriptures in Seminary. In other words, I recommend against using your expensive leatherbound edition in Seminary.
At homes that have Internet access, the scriptures can be studied online on the scripture pages
of the primary Church web site (lds.org). For the suggested reading schedule for 2008-2009, click here. A helpful web site for regular scripture study is http://www.readthescriptures.com/, where you can sign up to receive passages via e-mail.
- STUDY MATERIALS. Supplemental
study materials can be found on the
seminary web pages of the Church Education System web site. A
link
to the student manual is on that site, and a printed copy is
available upon request. Here are links to the student manual is available in two formats: HTML and PDF (large file size).
- SCRIPTURE MASTERY. How well
you learn the 26 Scripture Mastery scriptures will be part of the grade
you will be given. You were given cards to help you learn these
scriptures.
- To download additional copies, click
here.
- For the Church's scripture mastery web site, click here. (Excellent resource.)
- For scripture mastery verses set to music, click
here. (Thanks to Sister Marylynn
Paul for these links.)
- For Brother Ben Holladay's web site that allows you to test yourself on scripture mastery verses, click here.
- CLASS TIME / CREDIT. Seminary
starts at 6:00 a.m. Anyone arriving after 6:01 a.m. is tardy.
- Seminary credit is given for students who attend at
least 80% of the time.
- Credit will be withheld for those who are tardy more
than 20% of the time.
- Absences and tardies can be made up by doing homework
assigned by the teacher.
- For the official policy on attendance and tardiness
(with a note from Brother Rushforth), click here.
- To see how to make up excessive absences or tardy days,
- Your grade will be based on scripture reading, class
participation, and scripture mastery. If you attend but do not constructively participate or if a significant portion of your "attendance" is based on make-up work, you will be given a "P" or passing grade. For the grading
worksheet, click here.

Makeup Work
There are three ways to make up work:
METHOD #1: Make-up Work Using The Student Manual
Makeup work can be done by doing study in the student manual. Each lesson, at
the end, has an assignment and/or a series of questions that need to be
answered. Complete the assignments and questions on a separate piece of
paper and turn it in to Brother Rushforth. Be sure to put your name and
the lesson number(s) at the top of the page. If there is more than one
sheet of paper, put your name on each page. The student manual is available online at seminary.lds.org in two formats:
Feel free to select your own lessons from the student workbook, but if you want to focus on the lessons you missed, you can check out the lessons taught each day by viewing past lessons and current and recent lessons.
Credit will be given for the time and effort it takes to do the work. Some lessons in the student manual will make up one day, some lessons
are lengthy and will make up more than one day, and sometimes lessons
have to be combined to make up a day. If you want to know how many days
will be made up by doing a lesson, ask Brother Rushforth. You can send your lessons by hand delivery, postal mail, e-mail (attaching a scanned copy), or by fax (1 866 373 3607).
METHOD #2: Make-up Work Using Worksheets and Quizzes
You can also make up days completing a worksheet or test that
we did on a day that you missed. It is anticipated that you should spend at least 40 minutes on a worksheet or test to get one day's worth of make-up credit.
For work to be made up for the 2008-2009 (New Testament) course:
NOTES:
Some worksheets will count for more than one day if the answers are thorough. Also, if you tell me that you spent 80 minutes completing a worksheet, you will get two make-up days. Also, if a worksheet contains a quote with blanks, try searching on lds.org for the quotation using the name of the person quoted and a few of the key words. If you cannot quickly find the quote, just skip it.
For work that needs to be made up for 2007-2008 (Old Testament) course:

April 3, 2008 Worksheet - Great Are the Words of Isaiah
April 28, 2008 Worksheet - Prophecies of Ezekiel
May 5, 2008 Worksheet - Conclusion of Ezekiel
METHOD #3: Teaching the New Testament in Family Home Evening
You can also make up days by teaching a Family Home
Evening lesson based on the New Testament, using materials that you learned in Seminary.
Feel free to download and use a worksheet or test from the
METHOD #2 section above or from the New Testament Student manual (mentioned in METHOD #1, above). To qualify for this credit, you must give
Brother Rushforth a written memo explaining what you taught
and how you taught it.
IMPORTANT: Make-up work should take about the same amount of time as a class period (40 minutes). Credit will be given based on the work done. For example, if you teach a 20-minute home-evening lesson that took 60 minutes to prepare, you will get two days of make-up credit. It will help if you indicate on the report you turn in how much time you took to do the work; otherwise, Brother Rushforth will use his best judgment (which means he will guess).
For Brother Rushforth's class, watching or reading General Conference talks is not a way to make up Seminary absences and tardies.

Your Teacher
Brother
Layne Rushforth is from the Durango Ward of the Lone Mountain
Stake. Brother Rushforth was raised in Kaysville, Utah, which is
between Salt Lake City and Ogden. Approximately eleventy dozen years
ago, he served as a Spanish-speaking missionary in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. He taught for three years in the Language Training
Mission (LTM) before its name was changed to the Missionary Training Center
(MTC). He attended BYU, graduating with a bachelor's degree in
Political Science and Spanish. He subsequently received his juris
doctor degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. He and his
family have made Las Vegas their home since 1981.
Brother Rushforth and his wife, Sharon, have six children and nine
grandchildren. Their four
sons have served missions in North Carolina (Spanish), Brazil,
Mississippi, and Virginia. In
September of 2006, Brother Rushforth was released as Bishop of the
Durango Ward and started teaching seminary two weeks later. This
background should serve as a warning that Brother Rushforth's lessons
may sometimes sound like advice and preaching from a Bishop, father,
and/or grandfather. He is an attorney practicing in the area of trusts and estates
(i.e., estate planning and probate), so it is unlikely there will be much attorney advice
in his lessons.
